So I first came to Chicago when I was in my early 20s.

And I was still trying to figure out who I was,

still searching for a purpose in my life.

And it was a neighborhood not far from here where I began working with church groups in the shadows of closed steel mills.

It was on these streets where I witnessed the power of faith,

and the quiet dignity of working people in the face of struggle and loss.

這裡的「in the shadows of」，

是「在…...陰影的籠罩下，在有…...危險的情況下」

※注意：in the shadow of是「在…附近 」

而「closed steel mills」，

  They will carry out their plan with steel determination. 他們將以堅定的決心實現計畫。

整句話的意思就是「開始與教會團體在倒閉且危險的煉鋼廠附近工作」

這裡的「quiet dignity」，

• 1. 尊嚴；莊嚴[U]

  He maintained his dignity throughout the trial. 在整個審訊過程中他始終不失尊嚴。

• 2. 尊貴；高尚[U]

  A man's dignity depends not upon his wealth but upon his character. 人高尚與否不取決於他的財富，而取決於他的品格。

這裡的「in the face of」，

有兩個意思，

• 1. 面對

  They showed courage in the face of danger. 面對危險他們表現出了勇氣。We are powerless in the face of such forces. 面對這樣強大的力量, 我們無能為力。

• 2. 不顧; 儘管

  continue in the face of criticism 不顧批評而繼續He succeeded in the face of great opposition. 儘管遭到許多反對, 他還是成功了。
• 雖然這兩個意思是不同的，
• 但我個人認為用在這個地方，
• 兩種意思都能解釋到位。
• 整句話的意思就是
• 「打拼的百姓面對鬥爭、失敗時的寂靜的尊嚴」
